The Invincible Iron Man#19 – written by Gerry Duggan, with art by Andrea Di Vito –unleashes a new version of the Dark Avengers upon the Marvel Universe. In the final hour ofthe final battle with Orchis,War Machine leads Iron Man, Sandman, the Living Laser, Rhino, Stilt Man, and other criminals onto the battlefield.

The end of the issue suggests that this won’t be the last readers see of this team, or at least a variation of this – a group of redeemed villains with heroic potential.
The Dark Avengers name carried a twisted legacy in Marvel lore; the original team was formed when Norman Osborn – having taken over S.H.I.E.L.D. as its new director, abd rebranded it as H.A.M.M.E.R. – recruited some of the most dangerous minds on the planet to establish his equivalent to the Avengers, even masking former supervillains in the iconic costumes of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

At battle’s end, Rhodes admits that he’s ready to do some soul-searching of his own, suggesting that some version of the team he assembled could continue to do good in the world.
Dating back to last year, Iron Man has been at odds with Orchis affiliate, Feilong, putting him in direct conflict withthe anti-mutant hate group. Add to the fact that he marries a mutant in Emma Frost andIron Man has a vested interestin the X-Men’s final battle with Orchis. Heading into said battle, his friend Rhodey – who just did a prison bid for Tony, who hired Sandman and the Living Laser to protect Rhodes on the inside – brought in his own reinforcements for assistance.

Along with Sandman and Laser, War Machine brings a crew of criminals he met at a bar – including Rhino – to fend off Feilong and his troops. At battle’s end, Rhodes admits that he’s ready to do some soul-searching of his own, suggesting that some version of the team he assembled could continue to do good in the world. Stark jokes that War Machine is about to build the “Work Release Avengers”, buta further monologue reveals this"new kind of Avengers"is destined to save the world.
What War Machine is proposing is a twist on the Dark Avengers. If it’s anything like what transpired for these last few issues, it has potential to give former villains a home to truly redeem themselves.

It worked for Sandman, who for the first time since his brief, legit Avengers induction, hasachieved his heroic redemption arc.Iron Manalready promises such a team will “save the world right out the gate,” so Marvel needs to push this team as hard as they can.
