Summary
Dee Bradley Baker, best known for voicing the clones inStar Wars: The Clone Wars,Star Wars Rebels, andStar Wars: The Bad Batch, knows just what story he’d like to see next. There’s a sense in whichStar Wars:The Bad Batchseason 3 was the end of George Lucas' legacy, because Clone Force 99 was one of his last ideas before selling Lucasfilm to Disney. That doesn’t mean the story of the clones is over, though, as Dee Bradley Baker - who’s voiced the clones since 2008 - is happy to remind us.
Screen Rant’s Joe Deckelmeier spoke to Dee Bradley Baker at San Diego Comic-Con, celebrating the upcoming release ofStar Wars: Outlaws. We couldn’t resist asking about what clone story he’d like to tell next, and Baker spun pretty much the same idea most of the fanbase longs for:
“Personally and selfishly, what I would love to see is… I would love to see Rex, Gregor, Echo, and Wolffe, and maybe even Cody, and see what they do to get them… [to what] we saw in Rebels. What do these rogue clones now do once the events that transpired in Bad Batch have played out? I’d love to see that. I think fans would do.
Where are the clones? I don’t know where they are, but they’re still there, and these stories can still be explored. That’s one of the wonderful things about Star Wars; you don’t have to take everything forward in a linear path, you may go sideways and you can go backwards. You can pick a point in that timeline and just open that up, and there you have a galaxy of wondrous fun available at any point.”
Star Wars: The Bad Batchended with these clones working as a grassroots insurgency against the Empire. But the outcome of ths insurgency has been an open secret all along, becauseStar Wars Rebelshas shown them years later, defeated but ultimately drawn back into the fight.Like the fans, Dee Bradley Baker really wants to see that story told.
This Clone Story Simply Has Got To Be Told
Lucasfilm may be insisting that theClone Wars era has come to an end, but that surely can’t be the case while there’s still this one last untold story. As Baker rightly notes, the beauty ofStar Warslies in the fact the show can hop around the timeline with impunity, meaning the story can head back to the past for a while. The Bad Batchseason 3 showed how easy it is to integrate this into an overarching narrative, because its Project Necromancer revelations played directly intoThe Mandalorianera.
Lucasfilm is officially working on the nextStar Warsanimation, recently hiring staff for the project. Nothing is known of this next TV show at this stage, which means it’s entirely possible Baker’s hopes will come to pass. Hopefully, it won’t be long before there’s more news; Lucasfilm is expected to have a major presence at D23, which would be the perfect opportunity. It’s possible theStar Wars: The Clone Warsera isn’t quite over after all.
