CyclopsandWolverinehave one of themost complex relationships inX-Menhistory, as they’ve gone from rivals to friends and back again. They’re often at odds, even when they have the same goals, and that relationship carries over in some capacity even in far futures and alternate timelines. However, the year 2099 offers one interesting twist - Cyclops is able to force Wolverine to stand down with a single threat.
InConquest 2099#2– written by Steve Orlando, with art by Ibraim Robertson and José Luis Soares Pinto –Wolverine, acting as Nova, attempts to force information about the Araneon people out of Spider-Woman, leading them to fight. Despite the ferocity of his attack, he isn’t able to take Spider-Woman down, much less get the intel he’s after.Yet it is Cyclops 2099 who gets Logan to yield, not his target.

Wolverine has historically been the one poised to fight, butCyclops 2099 only needs to issue one clear threatto settle matters, since Logan isn’t interested in Scott’s “line-of-sight transmutation” ending the conflict.

The radically differentdynamic between Wolverine and Cyclops’ranks among the most prominent reinventions of Marvel lore in the2099timeline. Wolverine has left his mutant life behind to become the new Nova, while Scott Summers remained faithful to the X-Men and their new Oasis X-base. Cyclops has also greatly expanded his powers. Threatening Wolverine with his standard concussive blast likely wouldn’t have garnered the same reaction, butthis new transmutation ability has an instant effect, and even Logan may not be able to bounce back from being turned into whiskey with one look, giving Cyclops' threat real weight.
Wolverine has witnessed what Scott is now capable of, and wants none of it for himself, potentially marking the 2099 version as one Cyclops’ strongest incarnations.

By 2099, Logan and Scott have had plenty of time to realize they each mean business. They’re both stubborn, albeit in different ways, so the surprise here is how much weight Wolverine puts on Cyclops' threat of violence. He realizes they’re not empty words and can’t dismiss them as easily as he might in other realities. Few people canget Wolverine to back down, let alone with a single line. It’s safe to assume Wolverine has witnessed what Scott is now capable of, and wants none of it for himself, potentially marking the 2099 version as one Cyclops’ strongest incarnations.
