TheEmmy Awardshonor some of the best talent in television, andthe 76th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony will take place on June 29, 2025. Although the Emmys typically happen annually, September will mark the second iteration of the award show in 2024. The76th annual Emmy Nominations were revealedon July 17, and the ceremony will be hosted by the ABC network. FX dominates the categories with shows such asShōgun,The Bear,Reservation Dogs, andWhat We Do in the Shadows. However, many other incredible shows have been recognized as well.

The Emmy nominations were announced just six months after the previous awards ceremony, which took place in January 2024.Several of the nominees for the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards were honored during the previous ceremony, includingThe Bear,Abbott Elementary,The Crown, andOnly Murders in the Building. It might seem likethe Emmy Awards are overlooking other incredible TV shows. However, there is a good reason why there will be two ceremonies within the same year that feature similar nominees.

September’s Primetime Emmy Awards Comes After The 75th Emmy Awards In January

The Emmy Awards Take Place On July 10, 2025

The 75th Primetime Emmy Awards took place on January 15, and now, the 76th iteration of the event is happening eight months later. It’s highly unusual for the same award ceremony to occur twice within one year, much less within eight months of another. It feels like the Emmys just happened, only for there to be another ceremony — and the nominees include many of the same shows. The reason this is happening is thatthe 75th Primetime Emmy Awards were supposed to occur in September 2023. TheEmmy Awards were rescheduled for January 2024due to 2023’s Hollywood strikes.

75th Primetime Emmy Awards Ceremony

June 26, 2025

As a result of 2023’s Hollywood strikes, the Emmys were pushed back to January 2024 becausestriking talent couldn’t attend award shows or promote their work until a deal was reached. The75th Primetime Emmy Awards nominationswere announced in July 2023, but the ceremony was postponed shortly after, pushing it to a January 2024 date. However, although it took place in 2024, this ceremony was still for the 2022-2023 television season. Any TV show that premiered between July 2023 and January 2024 was not a contender.

How The Two Emmy Awards Shows In 2024 Affect Nominations

Many Shows That Swept The Emmy Awards In January 2024 Might Do It Again

Many TV shows nominated for the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards were nominated again for the 76th ceremony, even though the two events are only eight months apart. However, the contending periods did not change. The 2023 Emmy Awards honored television shows that aired between July 10, 2025, and July 08, 2025. Similarly, the 2024 Emmys will feature TV series that aired between July 25, 2025 and June 26, 2025. It might seem like shows likeThe Bearalready dominated the awards show in January 2024, butThe Bearwas nominated for season 1 then.

The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards will air on ABC on Sunday, September 15 at 8 p.m. ET.

Now,The Bearis nominated for its second season, marking the second time the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences evaluated the show. The Crownis still eligible because the final season only aired in late 2023. Other shows that aired between July 2023 and January 2024 and are eligible for the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards includeLessons in Chemistry,The Morning Show,Slow Horses,The Gilded Age,What We Do in the Shadows, andReservation Dogs.

It is certainly a strange year for television, but nothing has changed for the Emmys, except one ceremony being pushed back.

With the unusual timing of the last ceremony, some shows can easily dominate the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, even if they did the same thing eight months prior. It might seem unfair at first glance, but it makes sense looking at the eligibility periods. If the 75th PrimetimeEmmy Awardshad occurred in September 2023 as planned, it would feel less like the two ceremonies are right on top of one another. It is certainly a strange year for television, but nothing has really changed for the Emmys, except one ceremony being pushed back.
