Matt Groening’s beloved animated sci-fi comedyFuturamareturned to great fanfare in 2023, and it has already scored a renewal for season 13. Set in the distant future on Earth, the show centers on an average Joe, Philip J. Fry (Billy West), who was accidentally frozen in the year 2000. Fry is a fish-out-of-water in the year 3000 and takes a job working at an interplanetary mail delivery service. Running from 1999 to 2003,Futuramawas canceled by Fox before being revived by Comedy Central in 2008.
The first revival was canned again in 2013, and it stayed off the air for 10 years before being resurrected by Hulu in 2023. Though work is still plugging away behind-the-scenes on the latest season, the most recent news finds creator Matt Groening teasingFuturamaseason 13 (viaSpace). TheSimpsonscreator spoke candidly while appearing at 2024’s New York Comic Con where he praised his cast and writers as the “most highly educated writing staffs in the history of comedy.” During the presentation,theFuturamateam revealed the animatics for the upcoming episode “Destroy Tall Monsters”, which will see the return of Robot Devil.

The news came just a few months after season 11 concluded in September 2023, and speaks to the confidence that the streamer has in Matt Groening’s 25-year-old hit. Hulu has typically renewedFuturamain two-season chunks, but the future beyond season 14 is still uncertain.

This continues the trend that has led to some confusion when it comes to the numbering of seasons. For all intents and purposes,Futuramaseasons 13 and 14 are the thirteenth and fourteenth seasons, but they are also referred to collectively as season 9.Starting with season 6 on Comedy Central,Futuramahas split its seasons into two separate parts, typically airing one year apart.
