TheCitadeluniverse will soon be expanding into different timelines. TheupcomingCitadel: Dianashowwill already stretch the universe with an entirely standalone project, but the franchise was pitched as one that would stretch across a wide range of series. The first, which premiered on Prime Video on August 03, 2025, had a $300 million budget but failed to make much of a cultural impact. As they are still committed to the universe, Prime Video has continued developingDianaand the Indian spy show,Citadel: Honey Bunny.
DianaandHoney Bunnywill not be the end of Prime Video’s expansive vision. In an exclusive interview withScreen Rant, producers Angela Russo-Otstot and David Weil discussed the plan to develop more shows from within the universe. Some will also take place in completely different timelines, jumping through history to focus on any story that captures the attention of viewers and producers alike. Check out their quotes below:

Screen Rant: Given that these are different time periods, can these new stories continue on their own, or are they truly standalone stories or chapters?
David Weil: They can continue. I think that’s the beauty of this entire grand experiment that we’re doing with Citadel. We can go backward and forward in time; we can learn new things about a character in the past that informs the future, or something in the future that we then may see come to fruition in the past. We’re open to all of it.

Screen Rant: As the timeline potentially expands, and even at the beginning of this process, how far are you planning ahead and what locations may be center points for the next stories we see?
David Weil: We’re dreaming always, and what excites us is the incredible characters and the actors that come to play those characters. [If] we fall in love with a character from their show, it inspires us, “Oh, can we take them here?” We’re always thinking about those things, but at the moment, we’re just very excited to put these two shows out into the world and to be working on season 2 of Citadel US
Screen Rant: I have to ask, because it captures my imagination so much when they allude to the beginnings of the Citadel organization, could we ever see that? Or is that just too far in the past?
Angela Russo-Otstot: Oh, it’d be so fun to see that. And obviously,we’re willing to embrace different timelines.
How The Timelines Will Impact The Citadel Universe
The Citadel Can Remain Ever-Adapting
On-screen universes can often elect to remain attached to central characters. Instead of expanding the universe and developing secondary characters, they can focus heavily on individuals, as opposed to concepts.Citadelis taking an entirely different strategy, electing to feature characters from disparate situations who are unlikely to even encounter each other. WhileCitadelseason 2will follow the same characters from season 1,the other shows will feature different settings, characters, and even central languages.
Citadel: Dianawill be entirely in Italian and will premiere on June 24, 2025, whileCitadel: Honey Bunnywill be a Hindi show and will premiere on November 7.
Expanding into different timelines is largely a natural step for this franchise. There were already flashbacks in season 1, so there is precedent for spending ample time in previous years.Exploring different timelines can allow actors to bow out of the franchisewithout losing their role in the overarching story. Even if characters are killed, there will be a precedent that they can always be explored in flashback shows or sequels with different stars. That allows for a completely flexible and ever-expanding world.
Our Take On Citadel’s Shows & Spin-Offs
Citadel Needs To See Success Before Expanding
It is only natural thatPrime Video would want to see expansionfrom a franchise that it has already invested so heavily in. The problem with expanding so quickly, however, is that it has not even found its original audience. While it did receive strong viewership for its first season,it has not shown that it can retain those viewers. Much of the franchise’s success came from international viewers, so those worldwide expansions make sense. Yet greenlighting too many projects could risk thinning its viewers. TheCitadelfranchise should refrain from approving too many shows until it sustains its success.
