Writing for hisNot A Blogwebsite, Martin explained how much he loved the battle at Rook’s Rest depicted inHouse of the Dragonseason 2, episode 4.The author compared the fight to the 2002 filmReign of Fire, calling it the best battle featuring dragons he’s ever seen put to screen. Check out what Martin had to say below:

I trust you all caught “The Red Dragon and the Gold,” the fourth episode of season 2 of HOUSE OF THE DRAGON. A lot of you have been wanting for action, I know; this episode delivered it in spades with the Battle of Rook’s Rest, when dragon met dragon in the skies.
Has there ever been a dragon battle to match it? I seem to recall thatREIGN OF FIREhad a few scenes where a dozen dragons were wheeling through the skies. So, okay, maybe that was abiggerscene, with more dragons on screen… but abetterbattle? I don’t think so. Our guys knocked this one out of the castle. I think they took it as a challenge. And the dragons…
Why Martin Is Right About House Of The Dragon’s Epic Dragon Battle
Spectacle & Emotion Combined For An Epic Start To War
Martin’s high praise for season 2, episode 4 not only indicates it was his favorite dragon battle of the show, but also the best fight between dragons he’s seen in any media. His assessment might not be too far off, as the battle consisted of three dragons viciously fighting with fang, claw, and fire in the skies of Westeros. Added to that is their blood being hot oil, raining down on the human armies, making the fight even more brutal than if it were typical dragons battling for dominance in the skies.
Alongside the sheer spectacle of the battle was the emotional resonance of its core characters. The fight sawAegon fall inHouse of the Dragon, his own brother allowing Vhagar to burn Sunfyre to death, leaving the king careening in the sky toward the ground below. While it’s unclear what his status is, season 2, episode 5’s trailer implies he lived. However, Rhaenys wasn’t so lucky, her emotional death scene making the fight even harder to watch. These moments made the battle even grander, giving its spectacle meaning.
With this being the first core fight in the Dance of the Dragons, though,it seems this is only a taste of how massive the battle sequences will get as the show continues.Since the war is escalating at a rapid pace, it wouldn’t be surprising if the already-confirmedHouse of the Dragonseason 3ends up crafting a fight that’s of an even larger scale. With the war truly only just beginning now that blood has been drawn on the battlefield between Targaryens, it’s only a matter of time before Rook’s Rest is upstaged later in the show.
