What Mycroft’s Casting Means For The Young Sherlock Show

Many Other Roles In Addition To The Detective’s Family Have Also Been Cast

Within the originalYoung Sherlock Holmesnovels, Mycroft has yet to become the government figure that would bring cases and aid his younger brother throughout his career. Despite this, he has already founded the unsociable reading den of the Diogenes Club, of which a visit to plays a part in the 2011 novelBlack Ice. Though Mycroft plays a major role in that story, however,Young Sherlock’s synopsis does tease that the series is set far later in the novel series.

With Irons' casting, Ritchie’sYoung Sherlocktelevision series has seemingly brought its search to cast the detective’s family to a close. Alongside Irons and Tiffin,The Handmaid’s Tale’s Joseph Fiennes will portray their father, Silas Holmes, who is described as an adventurous gentleman. Meanwhile,Halostar Natasha McElhone will take on the role of their mother, Cordelia Holmes. Our Take On Young Sherlock’s Mycroft Casting

Will Ritchie’s Adaptation Be Loyal To The Novels?

As previously stated, Sherlock is already enrolled at Oxford at the time of the series, a move inspired by Mycroft much to Sherlock’s displeasure, which is established in the seventh book,Stone Cold. With that novel centering on a body-snatching case rather than a murder, it is likely that the series may be taking the series premise and focusing on an original story. Furthermore, with Amyus Crowe, a character original to theYoung Sherlockseries and not a creation of Doyle’s, yet to be cast, it is uncertain just how faithful the show will be to its source material.

That said, Ritchie obviously has a strong track record when it comes to adapting the detective’s adventures, putting his own spin on the familiar tales and making them accessible to new audiences. It’s likely he’ll be able to achieve something similar with hisYoung Sherlockseries, even if he doesn’t stick all that closely to the events of the novels. His choice of talented young actors to play the two Holmes brothers already suggests the series is heading in the right direction, which is as good a sign as any in these early stages.
