Summary
With fans eagerly awaiting news of whenDune 3might finally arrive in theaters, the burgeoningDunefranchise is releasing the perfect new entry to make the wait easier to endure. Frank Herbert’sDunehas long been considered a classic of science fiction, boasting multiple adaptations over the years with varying degrees of faithfulness to the source material. Thus far, however, the adaptations have limited themselves to the time period of Herbert’s original books. With Denis Villeneuve’sDune 3set to adaptDune Messiah, that trend won’t be broken on the silver screen any time soon.
However, just because theDunemovies look set to keep focused on Frank Herbert’s original timeframe, the growing franchise is at liberty to be more creative. This has the potential to not only plug the gap with moreDunecontent, but also enhance the story we’ve seen so far. Theupcoming series,Dune: Prophecy, from HBO is set to explore a much earlier period and will be a perfect watch as the wait continues forDune 3.

Dune 3 Being Villeneuve’s Final Entry is Perfect
Director Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming Dune: Part 3 is expected to be a Dune Messiah adaptation, the perfect stopping point for his Dune trilogy.
Dune: Prophecy Will Serve As A Prequel To The Dune Movies - What To Know
A Strong Cast Will Bring The History Of Dune’s Setting To Life
Featuring Travis FimmelofVikingsfame and veteran actor Mark Strongalongside Emily Watson, the cast ofDune: Prophecyboasts several noteworthy names. HBO has also replicated the mood and feel of the sets and backdrops of the films, creating a visual connection between the two that will help the series feel like it exists within the same world as Villeneuve’s films. From the first trailers,Dune: Prophecylooks to be a worthy addition to this cinematic iteration of Herbert’s world.
The story of the novel centers around the earliest days of the Bene Gesserit and their manipulations that propel the events of the universe behind the scenes for generations.

The story ofDune: Prophecywill loosely adaptSisterhood of Dune, written Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. Set 10,000 years before the events ofDune, the story of the novel centers around the earliest days of the Bene Gesserit and their manipulations thatpropel the events of the universe behind the scenes for generations. While Brian Herbert’s novels have been met with a far cooler reception than his father’s, there’s potential in the work that the upcoming series could bring to life in a way the novels couldn’t.
Watching Dune: Prophecy Should Make Dune 3 (& The Other Movies) Even Better
A Wider World And Deeper Context Are Good Things
The Bene Gesserit has long been a source of mystery and fascination in theDuneuniverse. An order of so-called witches that haveoften been the power behind many of the Empire’s most prominent figures. All of it was to serve a single ultimate goal that sees fruition in a manner they never anticipated inDune. While some mysteries are better served by never being answered, seeing the motivations that drew the original Bene Gesserit toward their decision to begin working toward a goal they may never see in their lifetimes could add extra depth to the film universe.
Much likeHouse of the Dragonhas expanded on the past ofGame of Thronesin a way that’s improved the series as a whole,Dune: Prophecystands to do the same. Time will tell how well the series fits in with the cinematography and quality of Villeneuve’s work. Still, it’s an exciting time to be aDunefan, and if this series succeeds,it may pave the way for more exploration of the Dune universe’s past.If nothing else, it will at least scratch the itch untilDune 3is finally released.
