Housewas a spectacular show with clever characters and arcs, but one character came and left without making any real waves.Houseis a tense medical drama revolving around one doctor, Gregory House, played by the outstanding Hugh Laurie. However, while the show follows a medical procedural format with a new case being investigated each week, and the team coming together to crack the code and save the day, the show also draws heavy inspiration from the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, namely his famous series of stories all centering on the character of Sherlock Holmes.

House is a stand-in for Sherlock Holmesin this unique adaptation, with his incredible ability to spot minor details that others miss, drawing upon an extensive memory containing diseases, symptoms, and signs, and appearing as a social outcast. House is brilliant, and due to his incredible skills, he has earned the position as one of the greatest diagnosticians of all time. However, he finds social situations challenging, and often struggles to make friends. That’s whyJames Wilson is largely depicted as his only and best friend, but when that relationship broke down,Housetried to introduce a replacement.

Lucas Was Introduced As House’s New Friend In Season 5

Lucas Douglas, Private Investigator, Appears When House Needs Him Most

In season 5,House and Wilson are still in the middle of a huge fallout. House has always been careless, reckless, and simply awful at engaging with his friends. That is why, for the most part, he doesn’t actually have friends, so much as he has colleagues that either work under him, tolerate him, or, in the rare case of James Wilson, actually do enjoy his quirks. But when Wilson’s girlfriend, Amber, died tragically in an incident while following House, House did not offer his friend the support he needed.

Why House Season 8 Looks So Different From The Rest Of The Show

House was not always a lighthearted show, despite its funny moments, but season 8 took an extremely dark turn in both its subject and its visuals.

So, inHouseseason 5, the show introduces a new friend to House while Wilson is out of the picture. Lucas Douglas is initially introduced as a coffee machine repairman, but it’s not long before the facade drops, and hisactual occupation as a private investigator is revealed. Quickly, the two find some common ground, and House finds his company not entirely unbearable. And coming from House, that is a huge compliment, as the man usually can’t stand people in general. However, it seems that their shared ability to notice things that others miss is something they can both see value in for one another.

House Season 5’s Focus On Lucas Always Felt Strange

House Needed To Get Answers, And Lucas Knew How To Make That Happen

Looking at the inclusion of Lucas inHouseseason 5, it does seem like there were odd, underdeveloped, and unmotivated storylines built around the character that didn’t quite fit. House believed Lucas' PI skills could be helpful to him in a variety of ways, but,Lucas recognized things that even House missed, such as details about patients' personal lives, and the fact that House was desperately missing his friend, Wilson. As a result, Lucas embarks on a mission to keep tabs on Wilson, report back to House, and continue to be discreet.

And yet, the storylines featuring Lucas always felt a little off. House is the star of the show, with his name in the title. And, as a result, he is typically the smartest person in the room. Sure, he can be bested in other ways, but House is the one who notices when things are out of order, misplaced, or stolen. Lucas swept in, and it felt as thoughhis role was to continue behaving like both House and Wilson togetherin order to keep the dynamics up. But it also seemed like Lucas was potentially being set up to lead a new spin-off show. It would have made sense to develop a more traditional detective show in this universe, but the spin-off never came to fruition.

House Was Not The Same Without Cuddy, But There Was One Good Thing About Her Departure From The Show

Lucas Returned In House Season 6 (But In A Different Story)

Lucas Makes A Romantic Connection

InHouseseason 6, Lucas takes on an entirely different role, but one that shapes the narrative in a much more central way. Lucas and Lisa Cuddy begin to explore a serious romantic relationship. Having previously grown to become a friend of House, this is an incredible betrayal. House may not alwys be straightforward about his feelings, as is seen several times in the way they spar and flirt, but House evidently had a deep and abiding crush on Cuddy. So, whenLucas sweeps in and begins dating her, it causes House great distress.

House Was Not The Same Without Cuddy, But There Was One Good Thing About Her Departure From The Show

House underwent a lot of changes throughout the eight season run, but one of the most notable came in the last season as Cuddy left for good.

As a result,Houseseason 6 had a lot of conflict between the protagonist and his skilled PI friend. So, when Lucas and Cuddy connect romantically, this is a huge source of stress for House. Fortunately, the show does manage to take the relationship and twist it around to make it the source of House confronting his emotions properly for the first time, which leads toLucas and Cuddy breaking off their engagement, and House finally making things official with Cuddy.

House Waves Goodbye To His Competition In Season 6

But the biggest source of confusion around the character of Lucas is the fact that he just disappears after a certain point. OnceLucas leaves the show at the end ofHouseseason 6, he is never seen or heard from again. This is extremely unusual for a show that is so sentimental that it never fully lets go of the original diagnostic team under House, but also House’s new friend, whom, of course, he still has precious few of, leaves on bad terms with House, and is never spoken of after that moment.

Once Lucas leaves the show at the end ofHouseseason 6, he is never seen or heard from again.

There would have been bad blood between House and Lucas, which would massively influence the decision to revisit the character. In addition,House’s complex history with Cuddycould make things challenging, and be a constant source of conflict for House, which he certainly doesn’t need more of. And with his intellect being set up to rival House, his continued presence on the show would likely only undermine the lead. So, when it was time to bring Wilson back to being on better terms with House, even if there was still an underlying sense of frustration and even hatred of the man, it made sense forHouseto leave Lucas in the past, and simply erase that odd part of its history in order to focus on the future.
