It’s called Developer Mode because only people who know what they’re doing, such as software developers, should activate and use it. Some consequences could result from using Developer Mode without the proper knowledge, so tread carefully.

What are the downsides of using Developer Mode?

One drawback is that you might void your ChromeOS device’s warranty. Most warranties cover normal use, and Developer Mode technically doesn’t fall under regular use. Double-check the terms from your device’s manufacturer before turning it on to ensure your warranty stays intact. Also, when you turn on your device with Developer Mode activated, you’ll see a warning screen letting you know it’s in Developer Mode. This warning is normal, so don’t panic when you see this screen.

Another drawback is that your local data is inaccessible when in Developer Mode. To avoid issues, copy the files you need from your regular account and bring them into your account after turning on Developer Mode. Activating Developer Mode can cause you to lose all the files on your account, so back up your files so you don’t lose anything important.
