Summary

I thought thatTwisterswas a great movie, but I am disappointed that it couldn’t top the original movie’s best storm-chasing scene. I am a huge fan of the originalTwister, and after seeing all of the talent involved withTwisters, I was incredibly excited for the legacy sequel. I hoped that modern technology would allow the follow-up film to be even bigger than the original, andwhileTwisterswas impressive, no scene was as good as thisTwistermoment.

Like many other sequels, I expectedTwistersto take the destruction and carnage of the original film and kick it up a notch.Twistersdoes have some pretty terrifying scenes, withTwisters' cast of charactersdriving directly into tornadoes, being stuck in a pool during a storm, and even holding on to seats as a theater is swept away. However,Twistersfails to live up to the best scene from the original movie, with one of the original action scenes being more terrifying than anything in the sequel.

No Twisters Scene Was Better Than Bill & Jo Driving Through The House In Twister

It Was The Original’s Most Exciting Moment

WhileTwistersdid have some great scenes, no scene was better thanBill and Jo Hardingdriving through the house in the originalTwister. While Bill and Jo are driving through one of the titular storms, a house rolls onto the road in front of them. It is too late to stop, so the couple simply drives through the spinning house, with their storm-chasing truck crashing through walls and roomsuntil it bursts out of the other side.

Twister’s iconic flying cow does reappear inTwisters, however.

The practical effects utilized in the scene on top of the creativity involved in writing this moment make it one of the most exciting set pieces in the film. There is nothing as dynamic as this inTwisters, with most of the action scenes following characters holding on for their lives under bridges, in pools, or in theaters.Twistersnever impressed me as much as this moment from the original film did, which is pretty disappointing.

From Tyler’s one-liners to Kate’s quippy retorts, there are a ton of great lines in Twisters. It’s one of the most quotable movies of the year.

Why Twisters Didn’t Try To Recreate The House Scene From The 1996 Original

It May Have Been Too Dangerous

Although it hasn’t been confirmed whyTwistersdidn’t try to recreate the house scene from the originalTwister, I think I know why. With the exception of a fewTwisterEaster eggs and references,Twisterstried to stand on its own, with it barely lifting elements from the original film. So, it makes sense for it to stray away from recreating action scenes from the original movie, with it instead attempting to come up with its own.

On top of that, the production ofTwisterwas infamously troubled. Actors and crew members, includingTwister’s Helen Hunt, were injured several times throughout the making of the film, with this causing tension on set. The legacy sequel probably learned from the franchise’s past and decided to stay away from dangerous practical effects, leading to this stunt being left out ofTwisters.
