Summary
The amazing Abi Carter wonAmerican Idolseason 22, butI’m worried that her win could mark the end of an era for the ABC version of the reality singing competition series if Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan are also replaced after Katy Perry’s exit. Lionel, Katy, and Luke were the original judges when Disney-owned ABC revivedAmerican Idolin 2018 after FOX canceled the beloved show in 2016. They judged together for seven seasons, and discovered some of the most successful artists in the ABC era of the show, including Gabby Barrett, Benson Boone, Chayce Beckham, and HunterGirl.
However, beforeAmerican Idolseason 22 premiered, Katy announced that she was leaving in order to focus on her own music. Since then, there have been many suggestions about who should take her place, including formerAmerican Idoljudge Jennifer Lopez, Meghan Trainor, Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Adele, and season 22 mentors Jelly Roll and Jon Bon Jovi. In addition,American Idolalums Kelly Clarkson, Fantasia Barrino, Ruben Studdard, Clay Aiken, and Jordin Sparks have been mentioned. However, now Luke has made some comments that have made me wonder if it’s possible thatthe wholeAmerican Idolseason 23judging panel could change.

Luke Bryan Reveals That He & Lionel Richie Don’t Know If They’re Returning To American Idol
Disney Has Been ‘Tight-Lipped’ About The Decision About Who Will Replace Katy
In an interview withBillboard, when Luke was asked about Katy’s replacement he said,“It’s been interesting.“He explained,“It’s been something Disney [has] been really tight-lipped about with me and Lionel and Ryan [Seacrest].“Luke then said something concerning, which was,“We currently haven’t heard what the story is on who’s coming back, and if Lionel and I are coming back.I think Disney is just trying to figure out what they want to do, and we’re just kind of sitting back and waiting until they decide.”
“We currently haven’t heard what the story is on who’s coming back, and if Lionel and I are coming back.”

I’m concerned that Lionel and Luke seem to be shut out of the decision aboutwho will replace Katy on theAmerican Idolseason 23 judging panel. Although it makes sense that the network will have a big say in it, Lionel and Luke are superstars who deserve the respect to be in on the decision about who’ll be joining them. However, I believe that it’s possible that Disney is leaving them out of the talks because the producers might be planning on replacing them too.
I’m Convinced Jennifer Lopez Is Returning To Judge American Idol For This One Reason
Former American Idol judge Jennifer Lopez has said that she won’t have time to replace Katy Perry, but a recent development could change everything.
Luke & Lionel Might Be Replaced If Katy’s American Idol Successor Is A Man
American Idol Shouldn’t Have An All-Male Judging Panel
Although I believe that Katy is irreplaceable, someone is going to have to come in and take her seat at theAmerican Idoljudging table. In hisBillboardinterview, Luke gushed about Katy saying,“Katy was really perfect for that job, and I think they’re just working real hard to find somebody that can really come in and do the job that Katy did.“While it would make sense for the network to choose a young female pop star with a big personality to fill the void left by Katy, the show could decide to go in a different direction.
If the newAmerican Idoljudge is male, such as Jelly Roll or Jon Bon Jovi, then, as much as it pains me to say it, Luke or Lionel or both will have to be replaced as well. The show won’t work with three male judges because it needs a female voice on the panel. Katy was an advocate for and an inspiration to the female performers on the show, and her successor must provide that same support.

The same problem could arise ifAmerican Idoldecides to choose a judge who’s in the same music genre as Lionel or Luke. Lionel represents the R&B/soul genre, while Luke is a country artist, so if the show adds another judge from one of those categories, then one of them might have to be replaced. However, the show won’t be the same without them.
Meghan Trainor Would Make The Perfect American Idol Judge (But Does She Have What It Takes?)
Meghan Trainor wants to be the next American Idol judge alongside Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. Can she fill the void left by Katy Perry?
Luke andLionel clearly love beingAmerican Idoljudges. I love seeing their infectious excitement when they find an extraordinarily talented artist. I find it so heartwarming to see them root for the contestants after their performances, and give them guidance when it’s necessary. It’s also so inspiring to see them perform with the finalists during the season finale, knowing that they’re welcoming them into the music industry with open arms.

IfAmerican Idolseason 23 welcomes a whole new judging panel, it will mark the end of an era for the ABC version of the show. I feel that Katy leaving the show will be a difficult enough adjustment andAmerican Idolneeds Lionel and Luke on the judging panel for season 23. I firmly believe that it would be a mistake to replace them too.
American Idol
Cast
American Idol is a reality singing competition that adds to the international “Idol” brand, conceived initially in the U.K. as Pop Idol. Holding massive auditions across the U.S., American Idol invited several contestants to perform in front of a panel of judges that would determine whether or not they’d go on to future rounds for a chance at competing in the fully televised premiere of the show. Contestants are voted off each week by American participation via voting through various mediums, and the winner of the competition would be given a contract with a record label to secure a future as America’s next musical idol.
