After many months of news and scant updates, theDCUis set to officially begin anew in exactly one year from today with the arrival ofSuperman. In October 2022, James Gunn and Peter Safran were announced as the co-CEOs of the newly formed DC Studios, and along with their appointment, they swiftly announced the DC Universe would be reborn. In January 2023, the first news about the new slate was revealed with details about several projects, both animated and live-action, in an ambitious project which was given the title “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.”
Since then, the final movies of the DCEU have made their way to the big screen, and other DC projects on the small screen have largely come to a close. While there remain a fewprojects that will live on as DC Elseworlds, the DC Extended Universe, or DCEU has now officially closed, making way for the new arrivals. Superman, briefly titledSuperman: Legacy, is set to not only introduce David Corenswet as the new face of the DCU, in a way that will potentially echo Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, but also to explore a new, more hopeful iteration of the character than what has been shown in recent years. While the film will not be an origin story for the Man of Steel, it will be the first official outing for the legendary hero. The film will see ayoung Clark Kent attempting to balance his lifeand career as a reporter with his Kryptonian heritage and his super secret.
Since the announcement of Gunn stepping up in DC Studios, a new project starring a younger Superman, and thus displacing Henry Cavill from his role, was a top priority for the new executive. In many ways, Superman is arguably the most famous superhero in the history of stories, not just DC, and without the character, the DCU would be missing a vital piece of its DNA. Fortunately, after so much speculation and theorizing, withJames Gunn deftly deflecting rumorsalong the way,the movie will finally debut in just 365 short days.

Superman is the original superhero. Having first debuted in 1938, the character iscelebrating his 87th anniversary on August 02, 2025, ahead of the film’s release in July. In addition, 2025 marks the 77th year since Superman made his debut on the big screen with the original Kirk Alyn serials bringing the character to life outside of animation and the page for the first time. This was a pivotal moment in the character’s history, and the serials starring the hero helped to further the character’s popularity.
However, it was another 30 years before the character received an adaptation that would live on in perpetuity thanks to the incredible performance asSuperman by Christopher Reevein the Richard Donner films that would define the character for the next half a century. Since that time, precious few actors have been privileged to take up the mantle and don the red cape of The Last Son of Krypton.
