Summary

A dedicatedStardew Valleyplayer has discovered one of the strangest possible ways to die in Pelican Town.Stardewmay be the archetypal cozy game, but it’s not immune to the occasional bit of player-centric violence. Whether it’s slaying slimes in the mine, or simply running out of energy, players can actually “die” inStardew Valley- although in-game, it’s referred to as “passing out.” But while it’s usually a swarm of monsters that does a player in, one enterprising farmer has found a new way to incur massive medical bills.

Reddit userMuch_Blueberry_1500recently shared a post describing how they learned thatStardew Valley’s train isn’t just decorative - it’s also deadly. By waking up early and running, as quickly as possible, to the train station, Much_Blueberry_1500 was actually able to arrive at the station before the train did. Curious, they walked along the tracks, attempting to see if they could run in front of it. And they could, but only for a moment: as the train left the station, they got stuck, and ended up in Harvey’s office the next morning with 1,000g worth of medical debt.

What’s more, while the dangers of the mines are a known quantity, the train is one of the more whimsical aspects ofStardew Valley, and it’s hard to square that with the deadly reality. The train chugs through the valley, and sometimes rare items, like Leprechaun Shoes, Geodes, and Mystery Boxes fly off it, landing in random places for players to find and pick up. The delight of random finds, and the possibility of picking up great gear, generally makes the railroad mechanic good, clean fun.

The railroad is unlocked beginning on Summer 3 of year three, when an earthquake shakes loose a pile of boulders blocking the track.

Another player, woomybiion Reddit, previously shared a video of their own farmer being run over by the train, which provides a little more insight into how such a thing happens. Normally, if the player is hit by the train, they’ll take a little bit of damage, and be pushed back a few feet. This normally buys them enough time to get out of the way before the train hits them again, potentially saving their life. Butif the player manages to run into the tunnel on the right side of the station before the train arrives, there’s nowhere for them to run; they’ll get pinned down by the train, and it’ll strike them repeatedly until they wake up in the hospital.

So, it’s certainly not easy to die by train inStardew Valley- players have to be fast, and catch it at an opportune moment in order to get stuck in the right spot. Still, it is possible, and is something for ambitious players to watch out for. Map breaks and other glitches are popular inStardew, as they can grant players access to certain rewards before they’re allowed. But sometimes, the risks outweigh the benefits. As a result, it’s best to give the train a wide berth inStardew Valley.
