Summary

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: Darth Vader #49!Luke Skywalker’s final Force feat inStar Warslore happened in the sequel trilogy during his climactic battle with his former student Ben Solo aka Kylo Ren. This is one of the most iconic lightsaber duels inStar Warshistory for the sole reason that it ended in Luke Skywalker’s death. However, what many fans may not know is that this battle isn’t the first time Luke exhibited such a Force power, asStar Warsjust revealed that he did something similar all the way back inLuke Skywalker’s “Yellow Lightsaber Era”.

InStar Wars: Darth Vader#49 by Greg Pak and Raffaele Ienco, the Schism Imperial have betrayed Darth Vader, leaving his side to jet off and find Luke Skywalker. In a previous issue, Vader recruited a scoundrel named Warba to locate Luke and then send him his location. While Warba did what she was hired to do, the Schism Imperial intercepted that message, and flew to Luke’s location in Vader’s stead. Even though that may have seemed like a stroke of luck for Luke, nothing could be further from the truth.

The Schism Imperial had a large shard of kyber and the means to fire it like a mini Death Star cannon, which means that they could very well vaporize Luke as soon as they saw him. And unlike Darth Vader, who wanted to attempt to recruit Luke, the Schism Imperial only wanted to kill him. So, when they arrived, Luke decided to lure their deadly fire to another area, giving him the opportunity to sneak up on them - and Luke did this by creating a Force decoy.

Luke Skywalker Created a Force Decoy to Fight the Schism Imperial, Just Like with Kylo Ren

Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi

When it came time for Luke Skywalker to face off against Kylo Ren in The Last Jedi, he didn’t show up to the fight himself, but rather used a Force projection of himself to battle his fallen padawan. Luke’s real body was on an entirely different part of the galaxy, controlling this ‘decoy’ remotely. While the energy it took to pull off this feat cost Luke his life, implying that this is something a Jedi can only do once, it seems Luke wasn’t without his practice.

Just like when he fought Kylo Ren, Luke seemingly created a copy of himself in the Force, and controlled the decoy’s actions remotely while his body was in an entirely different location. It’s fascinating that Skywalker, all the way back in his “Yellow Lightsaber Era”, had the strength and the knowledge in the Force to pull something like this off. It truly speaks to how powerful Luke is leading up to the events of Episode VI, and why he chooses to fight Kylo Ren the way he does, as this issue proves that it worked before on a smaller scale.

Luke Skywalker Used 2 Different Force Powers to Achieve the Same Thing

While Luke conjuring a decoy in thisStar Warsissue may seem like the same power he flexed in The Last Jedi, that may not actually be the case. Sure, both achieved the same thing, but the respective techniques themselves are more than likely different. Luke separated himself from his Force spirit to battle Kylo Ren inThe Last Jedi, whereas he merely seemed to exercise an advanced version of a Jedi Mind Trick in this issue, using a lifeless dummy to project his likeness onto within the minds of his attackers.

However, the specific Force technique Luke used is of little consequence, as the real takeaway is the tactic itself. Back during theStar Warsoriginal trilogy, Luke used the Force to create a decoy while battling his enemies, which is the same thing he did to fight Kylo Ren, confirming thatLuke Skywalker’s final Force feat goes all the way back to his “Yellow Lightsaber Era”.
