Summary
Inside Out 2has surpassed a major box office record set byThe Super Mario Bros. Movie. The latter title, which is an Illumination vehicle based on the popular video game property, became a smash hit as soon as it premiered in April 2023, quickly rising past $1 billion worldwide. TheInside Out 2box officehas been performing similarly since it debuted in June 2024. The Pixar movie is a direct sequel to their Oscar-winning 2015 movie, continuing the adventures of the emotions inside the head of adolescent girl Riley.
PerCollider,Inside Out 2has made more than $1.361 billion at the worldwide box office as of Tuesday, in the middle of its fifth week in theaters. This means it has outgrossed the global total ofThe Super Mario Bros. Movie, supplanting it as the No. 2 highest-grossing animated movie of all timebehindFrozen II($1.45 billion).Marioearned this record in June 2023, so it was only able to hold it for a total of 13 and a half months.

Could Inside Out 2 Become The No. 1 Animated Movie Of All Time?
The Pixar Sequel Still Has A Long Way To Climb
While taking the No. 2 spot is an outstanding achievement for theInside Out 2release, there is still a long way to go if the Pixar movie is going to top the animated movie chart. While it is just a few decimal points away from the worldwide gross ofFrozen II, the sheer size of any gross over $1 billion means thatit still needs to earn roughly $89 million morein order to claim the No. 1 spot. However, this is still a possibility for the popular new release.
The chart of highest-grossing animated movies in question does not include the photorealistic 2019 remake ofThe Lion King, which made $1.663 billion.

At the very least,Inside Out 2could draw dangerously close to topplingFrozen IIby the end of its run. WhenThe Super Mario Bros. Moviepreviously hit No. 2, during the fourth week of its release, it went on to earn an additional $71.9 million worldwide by the end of its run. The new movie, while a week later in its run, could perform a similar feat, which would allow it to draw near toFrozen II’s overall total, though it would still need to make a $17 million push to hit its goal.
This push could be accomplished if its financial prospects are proportional to its critical reception.Inside Out 2reviewshave given it a Certified Fresh Rotten Tomatoes score of 91%, compared toThe Super Mario Bros. Movie’s Rotten 59%. If this encourages more straggling viewers to get out to theaters to see the movie, it could potentially make up for that $17 million gap, though it remains to be seen if it could possibly be boosted enough to hit No. 1 instead of merely closing the gap between it andFrozen II, maintaining a very close second place.
