Today’s Connections Category Hints

JULY 5 #389

Today’s puzzle will be more or less difficult depending on your familiarity with the categories. While that is almost always true to some extent, there are very specific categories today that you will not get the connection for if you have not heard of them. To help you out, here are the categories to get you started.

PINE

YEN

This category is not as specific as the others, rather representing the yearning for something. DESIRE and LONG felt obvious to us. Looking at the other options, PINE seemed to be the next option, although perhaps sounding a bit melodramatic. We admit we had to look up what YEN meant to add it to this category, as we were only familiar with it as a currency.

NATURE

O

This one stumped us, admittedly, as the world grows increasingly digital and growing up without any magazine subscriptions except forZoobooks(now rebranded) made it hard to recognize any of these as magazines. Unfortunately, this proved to be our downfall today, and we have reconsidered perusing the magazine section ofBarnes & Noble.

The Letter Boxed game for the New York Times mobile app asks you to connect letters to form words while using various strategies to win quickly.

MONEYPENNY

M

Another quite specific category, this one includes two of the single letter options in today’s puzzle. That can be a red herring in and of itself, but we are more familiar with BOND movies than we are with magazines. This made it easier for us to guess this category, which we did before attempting to figure out what magazines were.

K

POWER

We might have figured out the magazine issues if we had known more about pop genres. K Pop we could have guessed, but not knowing the others made it more difficult. Those more musically inclined will likely find this category quite easy, as will magazine lovers find the others. Overall, today’s puzzle caters to very specific interests, so hopefully we have helped you solve it.
