Reddit announced via a post onr/redditthat it’s testing a new feature: an “Official” label. The Official label appears prominently next to a username wherever it’s shown across Reddit. Similar to theflair used on subreddits, this label serves as an indicator of authenticity.
The label is currently only available to a few profiles belonging to organizations it has existing relationships with and that are interested in engaging with Redditors and communities on the platform.
“We’re actively working with a group of moderators to get feedback on this, and as this is an early test, the learnings we gain will inform next steps for this roll-out,” Reddit noted.
What Does Reddit’s Official Label Mean?
The “Official” label shows that Reddit has verified an account. It serves as a visual indicator of authenticity, helping users quickly identify profiles belonging to verified organizations. It also lessens thework of Reddit moderatorsby separating real profiles from fakes.
Reddit mentioned that the label does not unlock any special privileges or protections for the accounts with it. Official accounts must still follow the same rules and guidelines as any other user.
The Official label also does not mean that Reddit endorses or supports the views or opinions of the accounts that have it. It simply means that Reddit has verified that they are who they say they are.
