What Is Apple’s Face ID and How Does It Work?

Apple released Face ID in 2017 with the iPhone X. It’s the successor to Touch ID, offering a quick, convenient, and secure way for users to access their iPhones and iPads.

Face ID is possible with the help of the world’s most advanced facial recognition hardware and software. We’ve uncovered it here, so it’s possible to better understand how this technology, which has become such a big part of the iPhone experience, works.

What Is Face ID and What Devices Support It?

Face ID is one of Apple’s biometric authentication systems. Apple introduced it alongside the iPhone X and added it to every subsequent iPhone ever since—except the iPhone SE (2nd gen and later).

Simply put, Face ID is Apple’s facial recognition technology that scans your face, checks against its database, and uses that to grant or deny you access to your iPhone or iPad. You canset up Face IDon the following devices:

Currently, there are no Macs that support Face ID.

How Does Face ID Work?

When you turn on your iPhone’s screen, it powers up the TrueDepth camera system housed in the notch. This system contains an infrared camera, flood illuminator, and dot projector.

With you facing the device, the TrueDepth camera system beams infrared light on your face while the dot projector projects a pattern of more than 30,000 invisible infrared dots onto your face. These dots create a detailed and unique 3D map of your face. The infrared camera captures the dot pattern and your face, creating an infrared image.

Your device’s chip processes the infrared image and uses facial recognition algorithms and neural networks to analyze the data. Then, your iPad or iPhone converts this image into a mathematical representation known as a facial signature. Your facial signature is stored as a numerical code containing information on the contours and features of your face.

When you first set up Face ID on your device, it captures several facial images from different angles to create a comprehensive facial signature. This allows Face ID to recognize your face from various perspectives. The enrolled facial signature is securely stored in the Secure Enclave, a dedicated chip within your device that provides enhanced security for biometric data.

Face ID & Passcode in the main menu of Settings

None of your facial data is stored online or granted to any third-party apps.

When you use Face ID to access your device, it compares the newly generated image with the one you used to set it up. If the generated facial signature matches the enrolled facial signature within a certain threshold of similarity, it will grant you access. Your device will also adapt to physical changes on your face as time passes—for example, a fully grown beard.

However, this threshold of similarity leaves room for error, and someone who looks like you (like a twin or a sibling look-alike) could get access. And that’s whyTouch ID might be more secure than Face ID.

Also, Face ID uses certain security features to check that you want to unlock your phone, such as attention detection. It ensures that you are actively looking at the device during the authentication process. If the facial recognition process fails to find a match or you’re not actively looking at the device, you’re able to still use your passcode to unlock the device.

Lastly, you canadd a second person’s face as an alternative appearance to Face IDso they can access the device conveniently.

What Can You Use Face ID For?

Face ID’s security and state-of-the-art TrueDepth camera system could be used for other things besides unlocking your device.

Protecting Your Apps

You can use Face ID to restrict access to certain apps for better privacy. You could, for instance, use Face ID to protect WhatsAppor lock Incognito tabs in Google Chrome. Look at our list ofiPhone apps you can lock with Face ID.

Making Payments and Autofilling Passwords

If you open theFace ID & Passcodesection ofSettings, you’ll find the option to use Face ID foriTunes & App Store,Wallet & Apple Pay, andPassword AutoFill. These will help replace typing a password with a more convenient Face ID authentication.

Creating Memojis

The TrueDepth camera system can detect your face in real-time and create fun 3D animations that mirror your facial expressions. You can use it in Messages or on a FaceTime call. So, learnhow to create Memojis; you could be in for a lot of fun with your friends.

Attention-Aware Features

Since the TrueDepth camera system can also detect if you’re paying attention to your device, there are some attention-aware features Apple has intelligently added. Your device will see if you’re paying attention to it before it dims, expand notifications if you’re the one looking at them, and lower the volume of some alerts.

You’ll find it inSettings > Accessibility > Face ID & Attention > Attention-Aware Features. you’re able to also access this option fromSettings > Face ID & Passcode.

Face ID Combines Convenience and Security

Face ID is Apple’s ingenious combination of convenience and security in an almost perfect balance. The likelihood of breaching the security of a Face ID-enabled device, while higher than Touch ID, is low enough that it justifies how quickly you can get into your phone.

Face ID removes the need to touch your device, and all the millions of processes involved with the TrueDepth camera work in a blink of an eye. It doesn’t seem like Face ID will be going away from the Apple ecosystem any time soon.
