Why Do Some EVs and Hybrids Have a “B” Gear and What Does It Do?
While hybrid and electric vehicles are operated almost the same as pure internal combustion engine vehicles, they do have some unique features and settings that may confuse some drivers. One of these is the addition of a B gear on an electrified vehicle’s gear selector.

B Is for Braking
The reason this special transmission setting is simply called “B” is because it refers to braking. It can usually be selected via the transmission lever, and it’s been present as far back as the first-generation (2001–2003) Toyota Prius, before other automakers like Nissan and BMW began adding it to their hybrids and EVs.
The B gear on a vehicle’s transmission is often referred to by other names, including “B-mode” or “Engine Braking,” although the latter is a misnomer given that it’s using the electric motor, not the combustion engine, to provide the extra braking.
What Does the B Gear Do?
The strength of an electrified vehicle’s regenerative braking will increase when the B gear is used. While acceleration will feel normal, the vehicle will slow down much quicker and feel like there’s a lot of drag force pushing against it. An EV or hybrid’sregenerative braking system will recover energyduring deceleration to keep its batteries charged and extend its range.
Increased regenerative braking also enablessingle-pedal drivingfor a more golf cart-like driving experience. This can also reduce wear and tear on a vehicle’s normal brakes.
How Do You Use the Braking Gear?
Some vehicles, like the Toyota Prius and Nissan Ariya, have a designated B gear on the transmission shifter located on the steering column, dashboard, or center floor. The braking gear is engaged when the driver moves the vehicle’s shifter into this position, which is usually located to the side of the standard D position.
The Toyota RAV4 Prime has a more recognizable floor shifter configuration, with an S gear following the D gear. Moving the floor shifter to the S gear and then over to the plus (+) or minus (-) position enables the RAV4 Prime’s manual mode, which controls its regenerative braking system. This can also be controlled via steering wheel-mounted paddles, which increase or decrease the regenerative braking in steps for greater driver control in dynamic driving situations.
Generally, the braking gear can be selected while driving or from a stop. However, be aware that it may not be wise to select it at highway speeds. Consult the vehicle owner’s manual for proper usage of its engine-braking gear, if equipped.
Why Don’t Gas-Powered Cars Have B Gears?
Gas-powered cars don’t have a B gear on their transmissions because they aren’t equipped with a regenerative braking system. If not equipped with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters or another manual mode, many gas vehicles are equipped with a low gear designated with an L on their gear selector that is similar to a B gear.
A gas car’s low gear locks the vehicle’s transmission from shifting up into higher gears. This can be used in towing situations as well as for engine-braking purposes. For example, the low gear can be used to help control driving speed on hills, which ultimately reduces wear on the brakes.
Use the B Gear if You Have It
If you find yourself in an EV or hybrid vehicle with a B gear, you should be able to handle using it because, by doing so, you will make the most of your vehicle. An EV equipped with a B gear uses its regenerative braking system to recharge its batteries and slow itself down. Knowing when to engage the B gear can not only increase vehicle range but also reduce wear and tear on a vehicle’s regular brakes.
