Natalie Portman’sLady in the Lakewon’t be renewed for season 2, and there’s good reason for that. Based on the book by Laura Lippman, the show follows an investigative journalist as she desperately works to solve the mystery of two separate murders after escaping an abusive relationship. The show stars Natalie Portman, Moses Ingram, Y’lan Noel, and more.Lady in the Lakeendedwith episode 7 on August 23 after first premiering on July 19.

Despite good reviews, the show will not be seeing its season 2. In an interview withThe Hollywood Reporter, creator Alma Har’el explained that because the ending wrapped up every element of the show and ushered in a fitting conclusion, she has no interest in extending the story beyond the book. She is proud of her work, proud of the “liberties” she was allowed to take, andsatisfied that the story was effectively told. Check out her quote below:

Y’lan Noel as Ferdie Platt, Moses Ingram as Cleo Johnson, and Natalie Portman as Maddie Morgenstern all looking serious in the dream sequences of Lady in the Lake episode 6

No.This is a story that feels very complete to me. I feel like I’m honored that I got the freedom that I got to do what we did with the book. I’m thankful to both Laura Lippman and Apple, that they allowed us to take such liberties, and I think we explored everything that there was to explore.

Lady In The Lake Doesn’t Need A Follow-Up

A Hypothetical Season 2 Would Need To Be Completely Different

Portman’s latest show has proven to thrill audiences and critics alike. It has earned a75% score on the Rotten TomatoesTomatometer and a73% score from audienceson the Popcornmeter. Many regular viewers cite that the show is somewhat busy and disjointed, though others praise the performances and the intelligence of its characters. Critics have also been favorable, asLady in the Lake’s professional reviewspraised the decision to allow Cleo to have just as much influence and agency as Maddie. That doesn’t mean that the show needs a season 2, however.

Having been inspired by Lippman’s book, the show would be taking a severe risk if it elected to move into another mystery altogether. Though it took liberties, it still followed the book’s basic concept, and it would need to make up another story entirely if it was renewed for a second season. Additionally, theLady in the Lakebook was inspired by a true story, so it would be in bad taste to switch to another real-world story with little justification for Maddie’s involvement. Unless Lippman writes a sequel, a season 2 is entirely unnecessary.

Lady in the Lake

Every Vision Maddie Has & What They Mean In Lady In The Lake Episode 6

Directed by the show’s visionary creator Alma Har’el, Lady in the Lake episode 6 explores the visions of Maddie’s subconscious to find Cleo’s killer.

Creating a follow-up season would risk a ruinous series of episodes that could poison the popular perception of the show. It was incredibly well-written and well-produced, and any change could spoil its success. Both Cleo and Maddie’s stories are wrapped up and properly concluded, so there is no need to push on for cynical financial gain. The story is finished, andApple TV+ and Alma Har’el are both satisfied with its direction. There is no need to renewLady in the Lakefor another season.
